CLIMATE, A DETERMINING ELEMENT IN THE LAVENDER HARVESTING

The picking of lavender obeys precise climatic rules. It depends on the hygrometry, that is to say on the humidity of the air. Clearly, a long period without rain can advance the harvest of a few days, while a thunderstorm can delay it by the same amount. Do not hesitate to inquire at the tourist offices of the areas in which you want to go.The flowering period of lavender extends from mid-June to the end of August. It varies according to lavender varieties, climate, altitude and latitude. Local weather is also a determining factor for picking.

Turn-by-turn directions

Welcome to the Drôme Provençale !

From the capital of Nougat, the route takes very scenic roads to reach the foothills of the Alps to Dieulefit, before descending to Grignan and its famous Château.

Leaving Montélimar, we go up the valley of Roubion, river often drained in summer, among the fields of lavandin until Charols. From there, a small climb to Ezahut and Salettes, takes you to breathtaking viewpoints over the Rhône valley.

At the Bégude de Mazenc, turn left towards Dieulefit, without forgetting to take a look (or more. ..) in the village of Poët Laval, starting point of the exile Huguenots in the eighteenth century.

At Dieulefit, we take the time to stroll in a very Provençal village, where pottery holds a special place in the heart of the inhabitants . The road then rises towards Montjoux and down through the beautiful little valley of Roche-Saint-Secret.

We then join Tauliganan, a village specialised with silk, then Salles-sous-Bois, in the heart of the lavandin fields.

The section ends then in Grignan, by the north entrance, which offers one of the most beautiful views on the Castle of Madame de Sévigné.

Often known only for its nuclear site, Tricastin has a great variety of treasures, including gourmet: olive, wine, truffles ... the solicitations are not lacking for epicureans, living witnesses of an extraordinary story, shared over time between the Romans, the Popes and the Templars ...

The section offers you to discover these riches from Grignan by reaching the border of the Rhone Valley to Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. After crossing the small wild plateau of Clansayes, we descend to Valréas and the famous Enclave des Papes.

Les Routes de la Lavande then go along the best wines of the Côtes de Rhône, between Valréas, Saint Maurice, Vinsobres and Visan to reach the city Nyons, famous for its olive oil ... and its distillery!
