Ancient Rome and Greece

During the time of the Roman and Greek civilisations, where well-being and cleanliness were very important, lavender was widely used for the same uses it is today: perfume, medicine and health and well-being therapies (lavender baths, washing water, softener for laundry).

Lavender's medicinal properties have long been recognised. As far back as the 1st century,
Dioscoride (40-90 AD), a Greek physician, botanist and physicist, wrote this recipe for lavender tea:


Note: we do not know which species of lavender is referred to. It is most likely aspic and stoechas lavender.
